Rottweiler Behavior

Basic Information Related to Rottweiler Behavior

Rottweiler behavior is a general concern for many individuals that are considering owning these massive dogs.  Many people are concerned with the size of the dog and the fact that they may be unpredictable at times.  You should fully understand their behavior if you are considering owning one or you know someone that owns one.  This is very important if you have children that are going to be around the dog.

First of all, rottweiler behavior makes them very good watchdogs.  They will form a very strong bond with their owners and they can be very loyal.  However, they do not form attachments with strangers very well.  This may be why they are often feared by individuals that do not own them.  This is also what makes them really good watchdogs.  Their behavior is not suited for small children either because they are not very tolerant of the child who wants to cuddle them or pull on their tail.  They can become aggressive if they are being bothered.

The rottweiler behavior also makes them very leery of people they do not know.  They need to be socialized in order to get along with all types of people and other pets.  These are things that you will need to keep in mind if you are interested in owning one of these dogs.  You will want to begin the socialization process as soon as you get the dog.  This would be even better if the dog is a puppy when you start.  You need to be aware of the fact that it can be possible to over socialize your dog as well.  This means that your dog may become afraid of people and actually bite people out of fear.  This is not a good thing either.  If you are concerned about socializing your dog properly you may want to talk to a professional dog trainer.  He or she is going to be able to walk you through the appropriate socialization process.

Rottweiler behavior is not suitable for other animals either.  You need to understand that the dog will most likely chase and kill other animals that are running away from it.  You will find that they do not even do well with other dogs that are of the opposite sex.  Cats are often in danger as well.  The rottweiler has an instinct to kill and if they are chasing the other animal they will usually harm them if they catch them.

You need to fully understand that there are often legal issues related to this breed of dog.  This is generally related to rottweiler behavior as well.  Many areas have a ban on these dogs and they are not allowed to be in certain towns or cities.  You may even find out that owning this type of dog makes it difficult to get home owners insurance.  Some companies will not insure you if you have this type of dog.  This is because the liability associated with them is too great.

As you can see, rottweiler behavior can cause a lot of complications for someone that owns one of these dogs.  You need to be very aware of all of the complications that can arise if you have this breed of dog.  It is very important to understand that these dogs can harm children and other animals.  That is not to say that they should not be owned by anyone, because that is not the case.  However, they may be better suited in a home without other pets or children.  You may also want to check with your insurance company to see if they will insure you if you own this type of dog.
