All about Baby Huskies

Baby huskies are adorable, just like every other puppy. But before you start looking at baby huskies to select one, make sure this breed is right for you by doing a little research on the dogs. Baby huskies need to be raised by their mothers until they are 6 to 8 weeks old. They are born with not much in the way of fur and they need their mother’s warmth to keep from getting chilled.

Baby huskies also need their mom’s milk to build up their immune system and help them get a good growth start. Just as with human babies, the mother’s milk is full of nutrients they need to have for their organs develop and grow.

A good mom cleans her baby huskies frequently, not just to keep them clean, but to stimulate bowel movements. When you bring your husky puppy home, he or she should already have had their first round of vaccinations, been dewormed, and be already eating dry kibble.

Having a puppy or adult dog takes a lot of care and a big commitment in both personal time and expenses, so be sure you are committed to taking care of your puppy for life before you even go to look at baby huskies.

Siberian Huskies are from Siberia, as you might expect. They were bred to be working dogs and trained to pull sleds through the snow. That means that a husky needs plenty of activity and exercise to make up for no longer being a dog who works everyday. They are built for endurance, to travel for long distances.

Historically, baby huskies were bred by the Chukchi people in the northeastern part of Siberia. They were used to pull sleds for long distances and also to herd reindeer. The huskies came to Alaska originally to compete in competitions, the All-Alaska Sweepstakes races. They did not receive any attention in the Continental United States until the mid-1920s.

There was an outbreak of diphtheria in Nome, Alaska in 1925, and it was Siberian Huskies who brought the necessary vaccine from Nenana, Alaska–a total of 764 miles. This very secluded and extremely tough route is today often traversed by sled dogs, bicyclists, runners and even walkers. It is where the Iditarod sled dog race continues to take place every year.

After this life-saving event, the huskies toured the United States and New England sled dog racers decided they were going to breed huskies as well. They acquired dogs to breed and soon baby huskies were being born across America. The Siberian Husky was recognized by the AKC in 1930 and in 1938, the Siberian Husky Club of America was formed.

Siberian Huskies are wonderfully intelligent dogs who tend to be very independent. Huskies have been bred over time as pack and team animals. That means it takes a forceful person to make sure the husky knows you are the number one dog and not him. Because of their weight and size you will benefit greatly from taking your young husky to obedience classes.

Huskies are very loving dogs who make great companions. Because they are bred to be warm at temperatures down to 75 below zero, you will have to deal with major shedding twice a year. They can adapt nicely to warmer habitats but they may shed year-round in locations that do not have distinct seasonal changes.

Huskies are exceptionally clean dogs. If you think a husky might be just the right dog for you, go visit some baby huskies and get acquainted. If the puppies have their mom and dad there as well, introduce yourself to them too. You can learn a lot about the temperament of the pups from the way the parents behave.
