Description

The Eastern lowland gorilla, or Grauer’s gorilla, is a Critically Endangered subspecies of the eastern gorilla. It is known for its robust build, large hands and feet, and a jet-black coat. Adult males, known as silverbacks, can weigh up to 400 pounds and are distinguished by a silvery saddle of hair across their back, which gives them their name. These gentle giants are characterized by their peaceful nature and strong social bonds within their groups.

Appearance

Eastern lowland gorillas are the largest of the four gorilla subspecies and can be distinguished by their stocky build and large size. They have a broad chest, large head, and a pronounced jaw. The silverback males are particularly striking due to the silvery hair on their backs, which becomes more prominent as they age. This species is visually similar to the mountain gorilla, but it can be differentiated by its slightly smaller size and shorter hair.

Distribution

The Eastern lowland gorilla is endemic to the mountainous forests of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Important populations of this subspecies are found in the highlands of Kahuzi-Biega National Park and Maiko National Park. Their range extends across unprotected areas of forest, and they are known to inhabit both lowland and mountainous regions of the country.

Habitat Preferences

Eastern lowland gorillas thrive in the montane cloud forests and afro-alpine meadows of the Virunga range. They are also known to inhabit tropical rainforests in mountainous and lowland areas of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. These gorillas are highly dependent on dense primary forests for their survival, as these habitats provide them with the necessary food sources and shelter. The destruction and fragmentation of their habitat due to human activities, such as logging and agriculture, pose significant threats to their well-being and survival.

This detailed species profile provides a comprehensive overview of the Eastern lowland gorilla, highlighting its unique characteristics, distribution, and habitat preferences.
