Tips On How To Get Rid Of Chipmunks

Have you been wondering how to get rid of chipmunks in your yard?  Many people consider these little creatures to be pests because of the damage they can do.  They can ruin foundations and retaining walls as they dig holes under them in an attempt to burrow.  They also eat all of the bird feed that you leave out for your winged friends.  Chipmunks do not bother some people.  However, if you are you are probably wondering how to stop them.

The first thing you are going to want to do is get your yard and areas around your house cleaned up.  You want to get rid of rock piles and dirt piles.  Use a weed eater to keep the edges of your lawn neat and clean so that they cannot burrow there and make homes.  This will also include cleaning up areas around woodpiles.  You may want to research birdseed as well and determine what kinds the chipmunks do not like.  If you get rid of their source of food they may look elsewhere.

If you have done the following things and they are not working, you may want to consider purchasing some hardware cloth.  This may help keep these little guys away from buildings and homes.  Once you have purchased this material, you are going to need to determine the high traffic areas for your chipmunk.  Then, you can tack this down around your porches and buildings so that they cannot burrow there and damage anything.  You can do the same thing if you have planted tulip bulbs.  You will lie this over the bulb and then cover it with dirt.  This should keep the chipmunks out.

So far, learning how to get rid of chipmunks does not sound very difficult.  You are going to have to understand them though and try to find out what they are after, how they are getting in, and where they are burrowing.  So far, not that hard.  If the previous tips have not helped you may want to purchase a live trap for them.  Once you catch them, you can relocate them somewhere else.  This is humane but it is also time consuming.  If you decide to do this, you will start by setting the live trap for your chipmunk so that you can catch them.  It is often recommended that you use peanut butter and sunflowers mixed together as bait for them.  The peanut butter helps keep the bait on the traps trigger so that it does not fall off.  It is very important to make sure that for the first few days you do not set the trigger on the trap.  You want your little creatures to get use to entering into the cage and getting their food.   You want them to be comfortable so they will continue to return.  When you are ready to relocate them, you will want to place a sheet over the trap in order to decrease their stress.

As you can see, learning how to get rid of chipmunks does not have to include any poisonous sprays or killers.  However, that does not mean that people do not use them.  It is recommended that you check your state laws about this if you are going to do it.  Some states have laws against this and you may get into more trouble or be fined if you kill them.  Before you go that route, you may want to try some of these options or spend time researching the topic for a while.  You may find that there is a lot of information on how to get rid of chipmunks and something you read may work.
